Harmony at Home: The Myth of the Model American Family
Sources required to complete this assignment:
“The Color of Family Ties” by Gerstel and Sarkisian
“Looking for Work” by Gary Soto
“Aunt Ida Pieces a Quilt” by Melvin Dixon
In “The Color of Family Ties,” Naomi Gerstel and Natalia Sarkisian assert that traditional nuclear families (like the one depicted in Norman Rockwell’s Freedom from Fear) are not the only ones capable of supportive relationships and strong family connections. For this essay, you will analyze three nontraditional families to discover which family illustrates the most supportive relationships and strongest family ties. Specifically, you will analyze and contrast Roger Jack’s family as depicted in “An Indian Story” along with the family depicted in Gary Soto’s memoir and Melvin Dixon’s poem and argue with textual evidence which of these unconventional and nontraditional families offers the best illustration of supportive relationships and strong family ties.
Your essay must:
Be 5-7 complete pages in length of analytical expository writing (excluding the Works Cited page)
Offer a clear thesis as last sentence of first paragraph
Start subsequent paragraphs with topic sentences
Directly quote at least once from Gerstel and Sarkisian’s essay
Directly quote sufficient textual evidence from Jack’s essay and from the other selection you have chosen. (You should have about 5-6 quotations from Jack’s essay and 3-4 quotations from the other selections)
Explain how these cited passages work as evidence for your claims
End with a Works Cited page
Have minimal or no errors in punctuation and grammar
Also: Write your paper using a program like Microsoft Word and paste it here but also upload the essay as an attachment. This way you will send me your essay as an attachment I can open.
